A uniquely character-driven roller coaster with complicated relationships

Characters

There were a lot of characters, and all were well-developed, which made them feel complex and realistic. It was often difficult to figure them out and predict their actions, which made them more engaging. Jua, Juri and Hyeran were side characters that left an impression—no clichés found here. Hyeran was so observant and unfazed. Although Juri didn’t get much screentime, she became more interesting as the story progressed, even though I initially thought she was just an annoying character.

Juri was similar to Seonghwa in her ambivalence and I guess that's why they got on so well as friends. Even she'd had enough by the end though.

I did like Hanmi at first—she was sharp, snarky and clever—but toward the end of the story, she kind of faded into the background, and it felt like she started relying on deus ex machina (just a bit). I liked that she was a cool female lead: honourable, morally grey and hot-headed. A lone wolf turned social butterfly, she hid her true feelings from those closest to her to protect them. She was an atypical heroine for a female demographic manhwa, which I always love. But people (including side characters and extras) did obsess over Hanmi a bit too much. It was a bit of a reverse harem, but it was executed so well that it didn’t feel like one.

Seonghwa was by far my favourite character and definitely the saving grace of this manhwa—the perfect sociopath. Super charismatic, calculating, and very, very fun. His schemes were so interesting and kept me guessing. I loved his manipulative genius and scary charm—how he could use that constantly cheerful façade to his advantage and take a punch with a smile. (I do it that I had a blast fangirling over Seonghwa...) Honestly, Seonghwa is the reason I kept reading past the halfway point.

It was especially fun to see him bested by Hanmi, anything for that checkmated face.

Relationships

The character interactions were often light-hearted, despite some darker undertones. Not every relationship was easily defined or clear-cut, and some were very complicated, which felt more realistic than typical setups. Friendships and non-romantic relationships were quite nicely done (both bromance and womance were present here). I don't think I liked the romantic relationships as much though.

I thought Ginny x Yuen was womance at first, but it turned out to be shoujo ai. It turned out to be the healthiest romantic relationship depicted in the whole manhwa.

Gun and Hanmi were pretty cute at first and reversed gender roles are always fun, but their relationship turned out to be quite superficial.

Hanmi seemed to be supressing herself for Gun because he wouldn't be able to handle the real her. He just couldn't her the way she needed, and it looked like she had gained yet another burden on her shoulders by having to take care of him. Since Gun was way too sweet and innocent for Hanmi, it also felt like Hanmi had more maternal feelings for him than romantic ones. They were drawn to each other namely because both already had someone more important than any romantic interest could ever be (their brothers).

A side note on Gun and Jua: I don’t think their relationship was incestuous per se; I believe the non-consensual kiss was primarily used for shock value, stemming from Jua's inferiority complex toward Gun and Seonghwa’s manipulation. It’s also refreshing to see a non-romantic relationship being the most important relationship for characters.

The twisted dynamic between Seonghwa and Hanmi was a major highlight, and I loved how intense their relationship was, masked by their (perhaps somewhat superficial) comedic interactions. Their psychological game of cat and mouse was what really created the suspense in the latter half. It was tough to get into both their heads since both of them were so good at hiding their true feelings.

Both were intellectual equals, and they had gravitated toward each other because they were kids who’d had to grow up fast. As Juri mentioned, life was particularly harsh on Seonghwa, especially given the implication that he and his mother were escaping domestic violence when he was growing up. While I’m glad Seonghwa and Hanmi didn’t end up together (because that would’ve been tragic for Hanmi—if she were a different kind of girl, I might have hoped for it), the AU gave me a little glimpse into what could’ve been, which made me feel oddly wistful (Seonghwa got his happily ever after—though I can't it that he deserved it—at the expense of Hanmi's happiness). Still, despite the toxicity, their chemistry was far superior to Hanmi x Junhyuk...

Honestly, I never saw the final ML as someone Hanmi would end up with, but near the middle, I didn’t really care (Seonghwa was the main reason I kept going, loool).

Since Gun was too bland for Hanmi and Seonghwa was too cruel, Junhyuk logically ended up being the middle ground, though that was really by process of elimination, imo. I think the development of Hanmi x Junhyuk could’ve been executed better—it left me with mixed feelings. His connection with Hanmi felt underwhelming compared to the intensity of her interactions with Seonghwa (and even the earlier cuteness of Hanmi x Gun, tbh). But I guess he was grounded and gave Hanmi space to be her morally grey self. Honestly, I never fully felt the relationship between him and Hanmi develop the way other relationships (be they platonic or romantic) did; the shift away from the brother-sister dynamic felt really sudden, and the supposed signs were so subtle that I doubted them. Although I'm not a fan of incest, I don't really consider romantic relationships between cousins incest due to my culture, but their interactions still felt more like siblings than anything else and this dynamic barely changes. Junhyuk just kept pulling away from Hanmi because he didn't want her to hate him for his feelings, and then tried coming onto her at awkward moments. Anyways, perhaps Junhyuk's musing—"Perhaps what I loved wasn't you, but instead the idea of being in love with someone I couldn't be with"—was meant to capture the complexity of their relationship from his perspective. I still don't really feel that Hanmi loved Junhyuk romantically, even if that's what the author is going for. I'd agree that she was in denial about his feelings about her because she'd hate him to leave her in case things went wrong. Well, I guess the justification is that their emotional growth over the time-skip gave them the independence they needed to make their relationship healthier by the end. Tbh, I didn't really care for Hanmi x Junhyuk, I much preferred Hyeran x Junhyuk over them.

Pacing and Plot

The plot was very unpredictable and character-driven (mostly by Seonghwa in the latter half), but the pacing of the story was a bit uneven. The first two seasons were alright—nothing mind-blowing—but I guess I liked the characters enough (Hanmi, Gun, Jua) and was a bit intrigued by the glimpses into Hanmi's past. There were quite a few moments where I ended up taking a break for like a month because the story dragged and I got distracted. After Seonghwa made his grand entrance, things really picked things up and the plot became pretty gripping so I binged like mad, but then the chapters after the climax were underwhelming (near the end of the manhwa).

Humour

The humour was something I quite liked. The light-hearted moments, composed mostly of comedic facial expressions and absurd character interactions, drove the comedy, balancing out some of the darker themes.

Overall

In the end, I didn’t expect to have as much fun with this manhwa as I did. Although the pacing was very slow at first and the whole manhwa could have been shorter (it felt so long at times), the characterisation, comedy and (eventual) suspense kept me going. The Seonghwa vs. Hanmi arc was the best part of the whole story. Once Seonghwa came in and started stirring things up, everything just flew by. The ending was quite lacklustre compared to the intensity of the previous seasons, but I guess it was doable.

Age Rating and Trigger Warnings

All scenes were pretty PG. Although, it is listed as suitable for all ages, I'd say it is 13+, due to the following trigger warnings:

Bullying, Drugs, (Non-consensual) Kissing, Swear Words, Violence.

I don’t write reviews I only yap ..

After I read the whole thing in 2 days. it was really long, long that I thought I will be rewarded but I guess not.

Many answers left unanswered and the romance wasn’t satisfying at all.

It felt like reverse harem, and the final ML getting cucked the whole series until the last few chapters. And when he confesses the series ends I expected more I only feel empty for who long I waited.

I've read this story 1.5 times, so I do enjoy it. The art, the cool female lead, interesting male leads and side characters, and unconventional story plot are all major plus points for the series. Also the villain was my absolute favourite type ie intelligent, manipulative, gaslighting, psycho charismismatic trash!!!
There are however some cons that detract this from being a higher rating for me. During my first time starting this, the shift in theme and how ship that I had secretly enjoyed turning into a probable end game couple was shocking. Also I loved all the side couples/storylines but the switching between fluff to angst to plot development felt jarring at times. The story also felt too long.

However I did give this a pretty high score because I did really like this. It definitely felt fresh, and the ending scene made me cry yall. Hope the author has another series in the works because I will definitely check it out.

I loved this read, it kept developing in an unexpected way and the I was actually satisfied with the ending. I’m so happy I read this and stuck with it, it’s like the chicken soup of manhwa.

There were parts that dragged a bit, but never for longer than 2-3 chapters. Lots of comedy 🤓 I found myself changing my opinions about each character as the series went on, pretty much everyone got fleshed-out character development.

Positives:

Strong FL
Complex characters, complete with tragic backstories
Good comedy
Slow (like, are-these-two-gonna-bang-later-or-am-I-just-delusional type of slow) build romance, which I suppose is understandable, considering their circumstances.

Negative:
The author tried to drag out the story and it clearly showed. I I'd dropped this manhwa once because the plot was too boring and needlessly long. The only reason I continued reading it again a few days later was because I'd already gotten attached to the characters. I had to drag myself over to the finish line, so to speak.

This is a good manhwa to read if you have a lot of spare time and you want to read about some high school students (straight or not) figuring out what love is. They mess up along the way, but they'll get there eventually.

This is one of the freshest webtoons I've read. The characters actually have substance to them.

Only thing I'd say is beware, you'll be binging this thing before you know it lol.

I enjoyed this series a lot, and although there were a lot of confusing parts, it still got my interest. I'm happy actually happy with the ending.
Seonghwa

Got caught. He really did love Hanmi, and wanted her to be with him despite the things he did. He just couldn't accept that there was someone more important to her than him. He was fucked up, but he did love her in his own way. Hanmi ! As much as she tried to downplay her feelings to Gun when she was explaining what Jun Hyuk was to her, it was clear she couldn't take the first step, or be the one to first it it. She could never take the first step because she was confused about the depth of her feelings. Was it pity? Was it romantic? Was she just feeling sorry for a relative? She knew how Jun Hyuk felt, but since he was distancing himself from her, she decided to do the same. For her, going away was the way she could sort herself out. But from what she said to him at the airport, she already knew how she really felt for him, and was just waiting for him to define their relationship./ Jun Hyuk ! Although he had been protecting her all the time, he had never taken their relationship in a romantic direction out of fear of being abandoned/orphaned again. Despite having kissed her. Even though Hanmi asked him twice to tell her how he felt, he never did. Hanmi even thinks "Why won't you believe you won't lose me." while sleeping at his place. Maybe she wants him to have faith in them? And after 2 years of not seeing her, and sorting out his feelings, Jun Hyuk finally gets the push he needs after he's drafted for military service.

Good but can be irritating

It's a good webtoon, but there were a lot of slightly irritating aspects. I liked the main female lead but she seriously has a communication problem. A lot of times there was no reason at all to keep something secret but she did anyway. A lot of characters had this problem too. I liked that she was a smart MC but I feel the webtoon pushed the "she's really special" thing a bit too much. Every time a character tried to resolve a conflict they usually failed until she got involved. Which was kind of annoying.

Also about 100ish chapters in, this becomes a reverse harem in a sense (she ends up with 1 guy tho, don't worry. And it's the ship most of us were rooting for anyway). There's about 3 guys obsessing over her at that point. It was just tiring. Loved her for 10 years? Created a complicated, illegal scheme to get her? All that and more. It was too much. Like she's cool, but she ain't that cool dang.

There's also like 200ish chapters which, considering the plot, really wasn't needed. Could've been completed in half that.

One nice thing about this webtoon though, is how casually both GL and BL elements are incorporated. Webtoons/manga usually have every single character straight or gay. So it was cool that among the main cast,some were straight, some were not. Heck the healthiest relationship in this (imo) is the GL one.

Anyway even though I liked it for the most part, I prefer the 1st arc by far. It just gets so much more needlessly dramatic/complicated as it goes on.

I feel like I mostly criticized it lol but overall it really wasn't a bad read. Could've been better, but it's still worth a look.

If you came for forbidden romance uhh you will get it. Eventually. Its such a good read with the comedy, characters and drama but geez. They really are milking it as long as they can. The moments of romance between the 2 main related characters are few and far between. Its super subtle otherwise which makes you feel like a lunatic hoping for more concrete evidence. After ch. 120 the author answered some questions in a author page and she hinted that the next volume would include more definite plot surrounding the male's feeling for his cousin. I would recommend this manga if you want to get hooked and feel frustrated too.

Toxic and Addictive

I just finished binge-reading this one (Chapter 0 - 153). When I started reading it I thought it would be a light manhwa about crushes and misunderstandings and oh boy I was wrong. I actually like and adore the story because it's realistic - the bullying, family complications, LGBT concept and etc.

but seriously though the relationships are really complicated! - I don't know what ship to sail, I both like Junhyuk and Gun for Hanmi, and even if Seonghwa's quite the psycho he's really hot (for me).

** It's quite clear that Junhyuk likes Hanmi.
** I feel like Hanmi likes Junhyuk too - though she might not be aware of it, because if she doesn't have any romantic feelings for him Seonghwa, Gun and even Junhyuk's gf wouldn't feel bothered at all.
** Gun and Hanmi's relationship is quite toxic - I don't know if they really like each other romantically or they just simple like each other, infatuation perhaps? they're not open with each other, lack of trust and communication - but they're really cute together. maybe Hanmi likes Gun because he's different from the people she knows, you know like the boy next door type who loves his family wholeheartedly.
** Gun and Jua's relationship is full of misunderstandings - I'm glad that they were able to talk more openly about their feelings on the recent chapters - Jua's probably hurting since he feels that Gun is just staying with him out of pity since they had a misunderstanding before his accident - Gun is too dependent on Jua, Jua became his comfort, he felt that he's the only one who can take care of Jua (I'm not sure with this one but he was feeling uneasy when Jua made friends from school and he even thought of becoming a Doctor in the future for Jua)
** Seonghwa and Hanmi - their relationship is messed up, hoping for more flashback since it's still unclear on what really happened with all of them.
** Yueun and Go Jun - finally became a canon!
** Junhyuk and his gf - oh boy I hope he won't fall deeply inlove with her since I'm still rooting for Junhyuk and Hanmi - though the gf is quite smart and cool too.

and... who is Junhyuk's real father?

How about Hanmi's father? I feel puzzled when Junhyuk's (supposed) Dad jokingly told Hanmi's Mom that he might be her father - Does that mean they had a past together?

I'am so full of questions right now and having all these mixed emotions.
