This One's For the Grown-Ups

Even though I'm an old man, I love manga. I love it because it gives me a way of escaping the tropes of American media. I grew up with them and so am old enough to be sick to death of them. And I love manga because many of its stories give me a chance to relive my youth.

On the other hand, I regret that, though I understand that manga is widely read in Japan by all age groups, seinen and what I would call "seinen+" manga are seldom translated into English. I've heard that one reason for that is the fact that manga for grown-ups uses a lot more kanji than manga aimed at younger people, and so it's hard to find translators for it. Another reason would of course be that the community of manga readers and translators is mainly young.

DoLL is, then, that very rare thing -- a "seinen+" manga. I call it that because if you average the apparent ages of the two main characters, you get about 45. If that seems unattractive, I should mention that it's funny as hell, and pretty sexy as well.

Here we have a man and a woman who are working at cross-purposes in almost every moment of their interaction. One of them is old enough to know that, but won't say it for reasons of his own, and the other hasn't reached a point to life to have a clue as to the fundamental nature of the conflict. Watch them go at it!

And the greatest thing of all about this manga -- the thing I love the most -- is that their struggle reveals the fact that they have the tightest connection possible between their two hearts all along.

What happened to this series? Don't you just hate it when you read a series ( good or bad) and before it has a chance to conclude, especially a short one like DOLL and the people who work on it just walk away.

this manga is something from real life

There are individuals who can relate to this very well. I'd suggest this for more older people who have a bit of life experience to understand the more subtle points. Regardless I had some good chuckles outta this so far. I look forward to seeing more. The fortunate thing is that this isn't one of those cliche I show ecchi mature mangas.

More than a hint of reality

Two of the characters in this remind me of two sleazebags I knew a long time ago, and it's just as wrong and funny as they were. Some Seinen titles are still readable by mid-teens, but for this one I think you need a few years under your belt. If you have, it'll give you plenty of laughs. The artwork isn't what you'd call 'beautiful' to say the least, but it fits the characters and story so far. Be warned: the humor is mostly of a sexual nature in case you object to that sort of thing, but this isn't a hentai title by any means.

The manga is mature and like a slice of life, when i read the description i was really interested in seeing how the story was ,and it was hilarious. I recommended it to people who are mature though and like to read something to the time
