Honestly, I don't understand the general hate towards this manga

Is it a romcom? Yes. Does it start with a love triangle? Yes. Are there many girls behind the MC? Yes.

It's like you don't want to see that this started as a romcom, and it had its natural evolution into a harem, although I've to agreed that Tomo's change of attitude was forced, but fortunately after some mini arcs, she's back to her old self.

This romcom is okay, it's not a horrible and annoying story, that surprised me, but it's not a good manga either, it has a lot of tropes. It's generic and goes at a slow pace, but what keeps this manga readable are the characters, imo they're well written, even if the MC is denser than a neutron, it has its moments where it can be assertive, and the art is godlike.

If we make a comparison of this series with a romcom/harem written 20, 25 or 30 years ago, this series is okay, it handles the tropes decently.

If you want a manga that gets to the point, read 100 Kanojo or Kanojo mo Kanojo, or if you want a more proactive MC, read Komi-san or Gotoubun. This one is your traditional romcom.

Genre switch after beauty pageant

At the beginning i saw many fanservices and how she tries to seduce him, and result is awkward situation which is for comedic purpose (this what make me read this manga), but later after beauty pageant the genre switched and became harem romance focus; it's kind of sad because i don't read this just for romance or drama part. i ended up drop this after the drama or harem getting more annoying.

Just for anyone curious about this beauty pagent arc that almost every comment claims killed the manga, I just thought I'd get into it a little for potential readers.

It's not that bad, but it's disappointing. Happens in the late 50's -60's in of chapters, and it's essentially just fanservice. It's a three stage beauty pageant, and the first two stages are whatever, although even those are a little forced, but stage 3 is a bikini water balloon fight on stage, which is just the most forced ecchi, cringe, non-school thing they could have done. It doesn't get over-sexualized (moreso than the event itself already is), but it still flies a little in the face of the innocent first love story that preceded it. It didn't kill the manga for me, as I didn't see it as that big a deal, but it was kind of a "squint" part that made me like the author less for having done it. I think ecchi is kind of gross, but I'm not as affected by it story-wise as maybe some of these preceding comments have been.

As a side note, this is also the part of the manga where the concept starts to stale a little, and they try to supplement that staleness with, as others mentioned, adding to the harem. But even then, it's not like it flips the script or reduces in quality or anything, it's still just a group of friends/rivals vying for the same guy

A Slow Descent into Mediocrity

And the main suspect is "harem", along with a heaping dose of arrogance by the mangaka and possibly her editor.

The first volume or so was quite good; I had this rated at a 10 because I really enjoyed the stoic guy x lovey-dovey girl pairing. Then other girls started getting introduced for no reason, the Pageant arc basically derailed the story, and character development has been more or less zero. Kuroiwa is about as lifeless a protagonist as Douki-kun from Ganbare, Douki-chan (although he DOES have eyes, so that's something) and he and Kawai Mona are static. This wouldn't be a problem if the manga had longer chapters and had done us the favor of not going into an extended run.

Alas, the lack of character development, harebrained storytelling, and the crummy Pageant arc turned a manga with incredible potential into something I'd rather drop than keep reading.

Put simply, good premise, terrible execution. I can't recommend it in good faith, although maybe it might be worth looking back on it once it's finally over.

I've already expressed my displeasure at the direction Hokkaido Gals took at length, and unfortunately this manga seems to be heading down a similar path, with added absurdity. As the reviewer below me mentioned, the

beauty pageant arc was ridiculous (and not in a good way), and this next arc that has come up after it involving ! Mona's longtime BFF suddenly developing feelings for Medaka is just completely unnecessary and painful to read.

I'm going to keep reading for now, hope for improvement, and hope that the Harem tag doesn't rear its ugly head in the future, as it is thankfully absent from this page at the moment. The art is great, it has a very clean lineart style that I love, so if nothing else, maybe that will keep me reading in the long run.

Painfully average. The

Beauty Pageant ark was very distasteful to me. They literally fling water balloons at each other in the gym while wearing bikinies... Yeah it is an ecchi manga but I swear to god that tag wasn't there when I first started the manga. fyi those water balloons looked like used condoms. I don't even have a problem specifically with that part. Just the Beauty Pageant part. Also the person below this said it right. The manga like many others had a good premise at the start but derailed severally. I wouldn't have even started this had I known it was going to end up being a harem manga.

Cool, Cute and Meh...

I really like the premise, the art and specially the girls. You know when they introduce the Yuri girl to be the annoying protector? Well, she's actually a wingman on this one, I was actually surprised. The others are also really fleshed out for the genre and I whish I could see this cast on a different plot. But that's it. FMC only recognizes her love on chapt 42 so you can really wonder how the author keeps milking the same idea for so long. Kinda funny on the start but it became so boring that I had to drop.

So ya this series is cute. Art is great. This isn't a series where the main character's archtype is cute innocent kind girl or even cute non-innocent kind girl. She's not what I'd personally call a 'good' person, neither is the MC. They're both flawed characters and yet it's cute. The rival character seems like a mostly good person, though also cooler. (EDIT: actually that's harsh, the guy isn't a bad person he just has stuff to learn) That's kinda a manga cliche though, I it being discussed on Bakuman. Just haven't been reading manga much in the last 8 years so forgot it can happen in romances.
bah I'm rambling.
EDIT: Ch 43. I'm enjoying this a lot! Time to bump it up 8.5->8.9
Edit 2: The ecchi has increased again :/ It can be kinda ridiculous at times.

Edit 3: as others have said, the beauty pageant was this series at its worse and was mostly distasteful. I'd pretty much recommending skipping the whole arc except the ending, really :/
And having a third love interest is entirely unnecessary, especially as that character is perfect in a separate function I won't clarify for spoiler reasons.
Post-pageant it still has some great parts, mostly the Mona chapters where she secures time alone with him. I keep reading because overall, it's still good and I think it can be better, like it once was (or close to it).
It also must be said that Medaka's character growth is too slow, now. He's had about 3 instances of growths, or rather, spurts of growth every 30 chapter (whereas Mona's was very gradual/constant and the other girls are established enough I'm fine with how they are) and in between them he's static. This has him feeling flatter than the rest of our main cast.

But I'll leave my rating as is until the series is over and then readjust it/

Edit: Ch171 now. Yeah this still makes me smile and even laugh a little, at times. But it'll never consistently reach the heights of the first 50. There *are *a couple of chapters that do. Rating change: 9->7.2

Repetitive but cute

Every chapter is just her trying to win him over. More female characters slowly get introduced. The art is nice. As a girl I don’t really care about the ecchi shots, but they’re pretty infrequent and mild. It’s a wholesome cute story, but it is getting a little boring.
